Things to do 2 months before:

  • Research moving companies and request quotes.
  • Make a list of all the places, subscriptions and services you need to give an updated address.
  • Set up your moving travel plans—whether by car, cab, plane or a combination.

 

Things to do 1 month before:

  • Start packing your belongings. It takes longer than you think!
  • Declutter your items and sort into piles: Keep, sell, donate and trash.
  • Make plans to update your license, car registration and any other state-specific items.

 

Things to do 2 weeks before:

  • Start cleaning any near-empty rooms. 
  • Continue packing. You’re not done until every item is packed in its place!
  • Put together an overnight bag with essentials like toilet paper, a few days’ worth of clothes, utensils, etc.
  • Back up computers and prepare them for the move.
  • Confirm your moving company plans and directions. 

 

     

Things to do 1 week before:

  • Gather keys, garage door openers and alarm codes for the new owners or landlord.
  • Do your final walkthrough at the new place a few days prior to move-in day.
  • Prepare and clean your appliances.
  • Don’t forget to grab some cash to tip the movers.
  • Clean out the fridge the day before your move. Put any perishables in a cooler.
     
     
How to execute a successful moving day from start to finish.

 

Things to do on moving day:

  • Pack it all up! When it looks like everything is out, give the house a final check.
  • Head to your new home and immediately set up the toiletries, cleaning supplies and trash bags.
  • Give the place a thorough walkthrough.
  • Check smoke detectors, thermostats and alarm systems to ensure they’re functioning.
  • Once the movers arrive, give them a brief tour of the house.
  • As soon as the movers are done, assemble the beds. You’ve had a long day—the sooner you can get to bed, the better!
